DREAM HOME - DVD MovieIt would seem a foregone conclusion that a stellar cast of actors, led by real-life marrieds Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz, and an Academy Award-nominated director like Jim Sheridan (In America), should be able to breathe life into a by-the-books psychological thriller like Dream House, even with its airy supernatural overtones. But their combined talents, along with that of Naomi Watts and the always welcome Elias Koteas, cannot save the film's moribund plot, which asks viewers to believe that the storyboard life of fa! mily man Craig is actually a delusion in the mind of a psychotic (also Craig) who has butchered his wife (Weisz) and children. Such a notion wouldn't pass muster as a basic cable feature, though all concerned do their best to seem invested in the proceedings. Craig and Weisz share the screen well, and while Watts is wasted as a nosy neighbor, the supporting cast, which includes Jane Alexander, Marton Csokas, and Gregory Smith, do their share of heavy lifting. But the film's extensive behind-the-scenes troubles--to wit, battles between Sheridan and production company Morgan Creek, which precipitated Sheridan's attempt to remove his name from the picture, while Craig and Weisz refused to promote it--as well as its notoriously spoiler-heavy trailer leave Dream House feeling a bit on the spoiled side, with only devotees of the leads or truly starved horror fans among its possible viewers. --Paul GaitaCharlie Tor finds the perfect house for his soon-to-be family of! three. A bri! skly paced hybrid of Boogie Nights and Goodfellas, Blow chronicles the three-decade rise and fall of George Jung (Johnny Depp), a normal American kid who makes a personal vow against poverty, builds a marijuana empire in the '60s, multiplies his fortune with the Colombian Medellín cocaine cartel, and blows it all with a series of police busts culminating in one final, long-term jail sentence. "Your dad's a loser," says this absentee father to his estranged but beloved daughter, and he's right: Blow is the story of a nice guy who made wrong choices all his life, almost single-handedly created the American cocaine trade, and got exactly what he deserved. As directed by Ted Demme, the film is vibrantly entertaining, painstakingly authentic... and utterly aimless in terms of overall purpose.

We can't sympathize with Jung's meteoric rise to wealth and the wild life, and Demme isn't suggesting that we should idolize a drug dealer. So what, exactl! y, is the point of Blow? Simply, it seems, to present J! ung's st ory as the epitome of the coke-driven glory days, and to suggest, ever so subtly, that Jung isn't such a bad guy, after all. Anyone curious about his lifestyle will find this film amazing, and there's plenty of humor mixed with the constant threat of violence and paranoid anxiety. Demme has also populated the film with a fantastic supporting cast (although Penélope Cruz grows tiresome as Jung's hedonistic wife), and this is certainly a compelling look at the other side of Traffic. Still, one wishes that Blow had a more viable reason for being; like a wild party, it leaves you with a hangover and a vague feeling of regret. --Jeff Shannon

In Harlem and Los Angeles! , he investigates the extraordinary popularity of hair weaves, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars annually to create and maintain; Rock even goes to Madras, India, source of most of the hair used in weaves (for Indian women, tonsure, or shaving their heads, is a ritual act of self-sacrifice). Along the way, Rock interviews a great many young women with fabulous hair (including actresses Nia Long, Raven-Symoné, and Kerry Washington, and rappers Salt-N-Pepa), but he also talks to the esteemed poet Maya Angelou, as well as men like rapper-actor Ice-T and the Reverend Al Sharpton. Sharpton, who is very amusing (he's referred to as "the Dalai Lama of relaxed hair"), is about the only celeb who touches on racial issues, pointing out that while it's African Americans who use the overwhelming majority of these hair products, the companies who sell them tend to be owned by Asians. Some viewers may object to the film's lack of a strong socio-political stance, but others wil! l no doubt prefer the lighter touch, including a hilarious dis! cussion at a barber shop about dating women with hair weaves (basically, it's "hands off the hair, pal"). --Sam Graham

These guys are no Lethal Weapon act; they may earn a grudging mutual respect but never really like or trust one another. The climactic 25-minute chase is edgy and lean and very violent, spiced with big bloody gunshot wounds and victims writhing in tortured death spasms, and the film concludes on an unusually satisfying note of ambiguity and cynicism. Marks went on to direct Friday Foster and J.D.'s Revenge. The title, by the way, refers to the police code for "officer in trouble."
