Venus and Serena William - Tennis, Art Poster by Carol Newsom

  • Print Title: Venus and Serena William - Tennis
  • Artist: Carol Newsom
  • $7.50 Flat Shipping Rate to Continental US. No Extra Charge for Additional Prints!
  • Image size: 7.5 x 9.5, Paper size: 8.0 x 10.0

With Come to Win, Venus Williams, the multiple Grand Slam tennis champion and entrepreneur, along with an esteemed group of business leaders, politicians, and acclaimed artists, serves up a book of wisdom that shows how to turn a competitive spirit and athletic background into success off the playing field.

Combining talent, drive, and hard work, Venus Williams has mastered the game of tennis. How will that drive serve her off the court in her post-tennis career? For inspiration, Venus turned to nearly fifty business leaders, politicians, doctors, and artists, all of whom previously played competitive sports and who are now at the top of their professions,! and asked them the essential questions: What principles that inspired you toward success as an athlete are helpful in life? In business?

Here an A-list group of visionaries, including eBay's former CEO Meg Whitman, Nike's co-founder Philip Knight, stateswoman Condoleezza Rice, entrepreneur and former NBA player Earvin "Magic" Johnson, and designer Vera Wang, respond with a useful array of tips woven through anecdotes from their athletic past that have been instrumental in their postĂ¢€"sports life success. Whether it's visualizing a course of action before it happens, turning losses into learning tools, figuring out who best plays what position in a team environment, or remembering that there is no substitute for preparation, the advice in Come to Win is knowledge every manager and aspiring professional will want to read. It's also an indispensable tool for parents and coaches looking to build confidence and discipline in their children.

Venus also ! reflects on what she has learned from her own coaches, includi! ng her f ather and mother, and how their wisdom contributes to her own remarkable achievements, from her history-making tennis career to the launch of her own businessesĂ¢€"V-Starr Interiors, an interior design firm, and EleVen, an athletic clothing line.

The lives and careers of the tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams are documented, with special attention paid to the training techniques of their father Richard Williams. With authorized bios like this, who needs exposĂƒ©s? While thrilling tournament footage attests to Venus and Serena Williams's domination of tennis, they come off as mere pawns to their father, self-proclaimed "master planner" Richard, who, as the narrator informs viewers, "single-mindedly raised two sporting champions." Richard has served as the sisters' manager, coach, and father, and according to this program he planned his daughters' destinies before they were born. There is no arguing with his success, which is delineated in the number of championships! won, the endorsements earned, and the sisters' phenomenal net worth. But self-deprecation ("I'm just a poor little cotton picker") is not Richard's game. "People look up to me wherever I go," he states at one point. "It's like I'm a god almost." There is much here to inspire young fans, who may enjoy the charming home movie footage and living vicariously through the women's glamorous off-court activities, which range from fashion shoots and music video appearances to commercials. But Richard's harrowing memories of growing up in the segregated South may be too graphic for some. --Donald Liebenson

The author shares the life stories of Venus and Serena Williams, who charged onto center court in professional tennis at the end of the 20th century with a force never before seen in the sport. No other women tennis players have matched their strength, their speed, or their overall athleticism, and none have achieved the status and celebrity they have gained on and off the court as they powered to the number one and two rankings in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). Venus and Serena Williams repre! sent in many ways a shift in attitudes concerning women in spo! rts, par ticularly African American women. By playing tough tennis, they conveyed to the public that it was acceptable for women to be strong, to have muscles, and to compete.

When Venus and Serena first appeared in the public eye, their hair bound in beads bespoke their ethnic pride, the braces on their teeth belied their youth, and their grit and determination enabled them to withstand challenges concerning the attitudes of these young African American women in what had traditionally been a white-washed sport. This book shares their stories, and it provides a way to consider the impact of race, gender, and culture, and the influence these have through sport in shaping popular culture. Includes a timeline and a bibliography of print and electronic sources for additional research.

Based on Takei Hiroyuki's long-running manga, the animated Shaman King (2001) rapidly won a worldwide following. In America, trimmed episodes ran on Fox Kids; the disc offers uncut versions. Pint-sized Morty Manto is shocked to discover his new cram school classmate Yoh Asakura consorts with ghosts--and Yoh's assurance that only "good guys" can see ghosts provides scant comfort. Yoh is a shaman-in-training, and he needs to find a Guardian Ghost with whom he can merge to fight enemies. With Morty's reluctant aid, Yoh clears up a 600-year-old misunderstanding and makes legendary samurai Amidaru his Guardian. Everything seems to be looking up, including Morty's blood pressure, when Yoh and Morty encounter the sneering Tao Le! n, who intends to become the only shaman in Tokyo. Although some of the vocal performances feel overly arch, Shaman King combines an appealing buddy comedy with supernatural adventures. (Rated TV PG: Violence) --Charles Solomon

From the director of The Descent comes an action-packed thrill-ride through the beating heart of hell! To save humanity from an epidemic, an elite fighting unit must battle to find a cure in a post-apocalyptic zone controlled by a society of murderous renegades. Loaded with ferocious fights and high-octane chases, Doomsday grabs you right from the start, and doesn't let go till its explosive end!Loud, violent, and proudly derivative, the post-apocalyptic action-thriller Doomsday is the latest from UK cult director Neil Marshall, who impressed horror fans with his previous efforts, Dog Soldiers and The Descent. Both pictures established Marshall as a director with a knack for reinventing well-worn genre pictures, but here, he seems more interested in stitching togethe! r favorite scenes and elements from established horror and science-fiction films. Escape from New York is the main source for Doomsday, though there are plenty of nods to The Road Warrior and its multitude of Italian-made carbon copies, as well as the zombie/plague subgenre; the lovely but impassive Rhona Mitra is the Snake Plissken-esque loner sent by police (represented by Bob Hoskins) to infiltrate Scotland, which has descended into anarchy following a viral outbreak. The disease has surfaced in London (now a walled city), and Mitra is dispatched to find a scientist who may possess a cure. Marshall's vision of Scotland in ruins brings together the punk/modern primitive costume design of George Miller's Mad Max trilogy with some eclectic homegrown elements (knights on horseback defending a gang leader's castle), and while these touches are novel, the picture as a whole should ring overly familiar to any viewer who's spent time in the exploitati! on trenches during the past 25 years. Younger and less discern! ing audi ence members will undoubtedly enjoy the plentiful violence and gore, as well as the unbridled performances of the supporting cast, especially stuntwoman/actress Lee-Ann Liebenberg as the heavily tattooed Viper. --Paul Gaita
